The Beatles are one of the most well known bands and are the best selling band in history. They were an English rock band, who were active during the 1960s. The band formed from John Lennon's first band, The Quarrymen.
Paul McCartney joined the group as a guitarist, who then invited George Harrison. George joined the group as the lead guitarist. The played whenever they could find a drummer, and played together for the next 2 years.
When they had their first recording session, it was suggest to the Beatles that they use another drummer, and Ringo Starr joined them.

In 1963, the Beatles reached number 2 on UK single charts, and they released a new album called Please Please Me. The album reached number 1 on the British chart, and held that position for 30 week, until it was replaced by With The Beatles, which topped the chart for 22 weeks. They then toured the UK 3 times. By this time, they were extremely popular within the UK.

Initially, it was hard for the Beatles to release themselves into the United States, as the record company would not release their albums into the US. But once they finally started to release albums, the Beatles took off in America. They went to the US in February, 1964. There they appeared on a popular American TV show, and it was estimated that 75 million people watched it (40% of the entire US population at the time)
They had their first US concert, which was extremely successful. This marked the beginning of the "British Invasion", when many UK bands made their way to the US to become famous.

The Beatles began an international tour in June, and performed at 32 concerts. The loudspeaker they were supplied with could not compete with the screaming audience. The Beatles became increasingly bored with their routine.

In 1966, the Beatles released Yesterday and Today, which has a very controversial cover, and caused an uproar.

When the band returned to the US, many religious groups were angry at Lennon's comment that said " We're more popular the Jesus"
After 1 year of travelling around the world, they decided to stop touring. They were also worried about safety after the death of JFK.
They released Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band one month before Paul admitted that he had been using LSD.
The bands manager then died of a drug overdose. The Beatles were lost until Paul took up the job and got them working again. However, after a while they decide to take a break, and head to India for a holiday. They returned with 32 new songs.
After returning, Paul wants to do a movie, but the response from the others is not good. They created a documentary.

By now, the Beatles have grown apart. Ringo Starr and George Harrison fell that they have not been given a good enough go at writing songs for the band. John announces that he has quit the Beatles in September 1969, and is followed by Paul in July 1970.
The others never announced that they had left, until Paul forced them by creating a lawsuit.

That marked the end of the Beatles, and all four split up and continued with their solo careers.
